how to proceed with very old credit card debt

I have sorted a lot of my debt out this year...i have less than £2000 left now EXCEPT for 2 credit card debts which I haven't had any contact with for years.
I got the cards in either 2002 or 2003 (cannot remember when) but I obtained them by lying about my income at the time...i got credit limits of 1,500 and 2,500 on the 2 cards. I only made a couple of payments to each card and ran them up to their limits quickly. I couldn't afford to repay them on even the minimum monthly repayments at the time and they went to collection agencies within a year of opening them.
Over the telephone I made one or two agreements to pay, but never stuck to them. I can't remember if i EVER made any payments after i defaulted- i dont think i did at all.
I had other debt at the time and tried ignoring it, and suprisingly these cards did seem to go away. I started returning letters saying i had gone away and even i had moved abroad.
Over the years I have had many letters from different companies/agencies/solicitors with regards to them, people saying they are coming round but then i return them to sender and hear nothing for months, then another company will approach. I have no idea which is which card- one was a capital one, the other was mint. I dont know if they are both still looking, or just one of them!
The thing is, i would sort of like them gone properly now! In fact it bothers me so much I lie awake at night sometimes thinking about them.
I got a letter about 3 months ago to my address asking for details of where the previous occupant had moved to (ie me) so they are still looking.
How should I approach this?
It is coming up to the 6 years thing, but not quite there...if i took them out in 2002 then it was the end of 2002, and it will now be about 6 years since i took the card out, but i contacted various companies in the 1-2 years following then, although i didnt make a payment...but i dont know how to confirm this- by enquiring about it, will the 6 year clock begin again?
If i wanted to pay them, i dont have much extra monthly money, can they still do a county court judgment if i cannot pay as much as they want. For example if i offered £50 a month and they refuse and ask for full payment and i cant do that, can they still do a CCJ or anything?
I probably had a lot of charges added onto the balance- can i request a copy of everything and then be able to claim for the card charges to bring the balance down (i may have £200 for late payments and going over limit etc per card)
Could i ask them for original credit agreement- if they cannot produce them (as they have been sold many times) do i still have to pay them?
Do i have any get out clauses?
Do you think they should accept an amount to clear the debt, like if it was £2000, if i culd get £200 off for the charges then offer £800 to clear it do you think they would say 'on yer bike' and go to court?
I am really worried about these...i just dont want to be scared of opening the post anymore! Or answering the phone. So i either want to pay OR find a real legal way NOT to!

  • Hi

I think it is great that you are making the effort to get these sorted out. I don't have any specific help, but at least it will bump you up.

Lots of IF,s and BUT,s . You are just as well to go on as you are . They could be statue barred soon anyway.Trouble is they have written to your correct address and you have lied about not being there . Not sure how you stand legally with that .
