Spend to save?

Just wondering what other people's views may be on this (hence the question mark in the subject line).
I spent money on work equipment that allows me to work twice as fast on some jobs. It caused gaps in my work at first until I managed to get enough new work to fill those gaps. So that has worked quite well (it had to in view of my finances). However, with domestic stuff I'm less clear on matters. I've lived on my own for years but incredibly, wasted money in caf!s and didn't do much home cooking. Was always too busy or too knackered from my work. Anyway, I'm not posting this to chastise myself for past mistakes. I've seen the error of my ways. It shows up in my credit card bills.
Now I've taken one step already to help myself. I bought an electrically heated clothes dryer which uses low wattage (basically an electronic clothes horse). I don't have outside drying facilities as I'm in a flat. Also, being out at work all day can make that tricky anyway - especially in wet weather. I calculated that the dryer would be far cheaper than using my tumble dryer or airing cupboard and would pay for itself in a year to fifteen months. I'm not a maths genius so hopefully I got that right.
My current conundrum is about having a freezer. It's only recently that I've realised what a money saving device these things can be - especially for someone who doesn't really want to cook every evening whilst tired from work. I do currently have a fridge with a small, two shelf freezer compartment at the top. Until now it has ben adequate for storing bits of frozen veg and Linda McCartney bogof deals (I'm a vegetarian). I can also get a loaf or two of late in the day discounted bread in there if pushed. However, that's as far as it goes. I now see all these wonderful recipes for veggie food that I could cook in bulk (when I'm not tired) and remove from the freezer for heating up but I just don't have the storage capacity. So I'm considering getting a different appliance. Such things aren't available on freecycle and there seems to be no joy in the local small ads. Also, I would be uncertain whether to get a small freezer only unit to stick on top of my current one or sell my current one and put the money towards a much larger unit with greatyer freezer space. My guess is that separate units would use more electricity. I don't have room for two units unless one can go on top of the other. Nor would I have room for a chest freezer. Looks like if I do this I would have to get a new one as well. It would be a big help towards living on 4 grand next year too (currently in training and doing OK).
I would appreciate any input on what I've written (sorry it was longwinded). I do currently have 0% deals on cc cards with no balance so I would hope to pay by cc cheque (5% extra) and pay off before 0% is over (if anyone is still taking cheques). Alternatively, MBNA do allow cc cheques into my current account so I could do that and pay by debit card (yes I know what MBNA are like when the 0% is over). I'm wouldn't be able to fund this from money that I have (non-existent :( ). I have a lot of debt and would only consider spending money on a luxury item if I can see a money saving opportunity for it.
Anyone out there got some thoughts on this please?
