storing ice cubes

Help please!

Our big party is on New Year's Day - DH and grandson's birthdays. This year it is a biggy and I just remembered we haven't enough ice cube trays for the drinks. I don't want to buy ice as I have time to make my own.

Has anyone frozen the cubes outside the tray and if so how do you prevent them from freezing together?

May I widh you all a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year

have you thought about ice cube bags?

You can get them from all supermarkets, they are bags with lots of little ice cube sized pockets. You fill the bag (and all the pockets) the end seals and you can stack them wherever you have space in your freezer. About a £1 for a box of bags.

Also many off licences sell large bags of ice for about £3

Asda, Tesco and all the main stores sell huge bags of ice for £1. They do stick sometimes, just bash them on something hard.
Otherwise I'm sure you could probably just use ordinary plastic bags or what about tupperware containers?

I put my ice into freezer bags or carrier bags .To date I have never had a problem with them sticking together. If it did happen small tap with a rolling pin would solve the problem.

  • Add a bit of tonic water and that will stop them sticking. icon12.gif

we just wallop it out of the trays into a big plastic container and they hardly ever stick together - although we do have the container in the freezer while we tip them in so they don't have time to defrost. Only real problem is having room in freezer for the container!
