Transfer of Royal Navy Pension contributions

Options
I was employed for 4 & a half years by Royal Navy in the early 80s before joining the Police Force. I was not allowed to transfer this as I needed a minimum of 5 yrs. However, is there anyway I can "buy" 6 mths and add it to get it transfered or am I going to have to wait until the age (anyone know what that would be ?) that I can collect these payments. I have a feeling I may have missed the boat (couldn't resist ! :rotfl:) on this but cannot get anyone dealing with pensions this side or govt side that will give me a straight or informed answer. Additionally people have joined from lesser contributing employees, with less time, and getting it transfered........allegedly. thanks

You will have to wait till 60 to get the Navy Pension. You cannot buy extra service in an occupation scheme once you have left it.
The 5 yeras minimum to transfer may have been a Navy rule rather than the Police so people "from lesser contributing employees (sic?), with less time" but in a scheme that doesn't have a 5 year rule would be able to transfer.
  • Until 1986 you needed 5 years service in an occupational scheme to be granted a preserved (a.k.a frozen, deferred) pension upon leaving the scheme. Less than 5 years and you should have had an automatic refund of the contributions you made (less deductions and 20% tax).

This limit is now 2 years, but in your case are you saying that you still have a preserved pension in the Navy scheme?

If you do then you should also have an automatic right to a transfer of this preserved pension. If you don't then that should mean that you have nothing in the Navy scheme anyway, so the question becomes academic.

I tried to transfer my RN pension years ago & was told that I couldn't.
Things may have changed since then, I have an RN preserved Pension from 77-87.
