Sharpening Stone

I bought a really beatiful (but embarrassingly expensive) knife from Kin at the Good Food Show last year. The salesperson told me that it would stay sharp for a very long time! Pah! No it hasn't! And I haven't used it all that much.
Anyway, I was discussing this with a collegue today and said that I needed to buy a whet stone to sharpen it. Said person has miraculously produced one that he found in an abandoned part of the site I work on. Could anyone confirm for me that its useable.
The box says ' Roebuck Sharpening Stone' on the top and bottom, and has a picture of a Stag/Dear next to the wording. On the sides it says 'Rectangular Bench; Alumininium Oxide Medium'... There are no other markings. The stone is slightly longer than the width of a pencil, and is 2 or 3cm hight and 5 or 6cm wide. The colour is reminicent of brick.
Does anyone know anything about whet stones? Does this sound like the sort of thing I need?

That whetstone sound a lot like the one we have to sharpen garden tools, don't see why you couldn't use it on kitchen knives though....maybe someone else knows better.
I think it might depend on what your knife is made of.
