Council homes for life ‘to be scrapped’

  • also people dont look after a property well if they dont own a property and rent. just ask howmany people who rent properties which have dishwashers builtin or provided by the landlord and ask them how many actually topup the salt compartment. tenants just dump a dishwashing tablet even if the extra salt costs only a few pennies.

I find that a bit odd, to be honest.

I always top up the salt compartment in the dishwasher, use calgon in the washing machine, and peridically run cleaning cycles on both machines.

Apart from the fact that I would always look after other people's stuff in my care, if either breaks down, it's a big hassle even if someone else pays for it!

Absolutely agree that private rental prices are too high and more councl accommodation should be built - but you can definitely get a rent of cheaper than £1000/month in London!

Where are you looking? NDG rents a 3 bed flat in central London zone 1 for that, I believe - you should be able to get a 2 bed in acceptable bits of zone 3 for somewhat less than that.

We now pay £1,200 a month (incl. water) for a 3 bed in WC1.

For well under £1k you can live in some nice bits of zone 2, such as Blackheath:

    (1) Asking price £850 a month, 2 bed, Blackheath:

    (2) Asking price £800 a month, 2 bed, Greenwich:

    (3) Asking price £648 a month, 2 bed, SE13:

    (4) Asking price £850 a month, SE1, 2 bed:

    (5) Asking price £206 per week, Shooters Hill (Se3)

    (6) £130 a week, Bermondsey SE1:

Tell you what, times must be bad when some are jealous of people in LA housing.

Plenty of cheap housing up t'north.

Seems obvious to me, those on disability allowance, 'seekers' of every colour and creed, chav single mums, old codgers etc. in council houses within the M25 should be moved to the NW, NE and Wales within 12 months.

Those without property rights have to accept they have less say when they are reliant on the tax payer.

Instantly you'd have lots of housing for the productive peeps to move down to the SE.

Spot on. All those flats lying empty in Manchester could save the taxpayer £££s by relocating unemployed southerners.

Wales may have cheap houses but has a much bigger shortage of affordable homes and council houses than england

(vast majority are forced in wales to rent from a private landlord as there is no option)

I know. They are often in poor areas and badly maintained. I would not live in one unless I had too. In fact been on rightmove today and can rent a lovely 3 bed detached in a nice area for only £70 a month more than I pay now. A lovely new kitchen and bathroom, a drive, no chavs roaming the streets, I am very tempted seeing as they are going to kick me out eventually anyway!
  • Sounds like stigmatising council tenants to me. This has been bandied about numerous times by the Tories and Labour and has never come to fruition.

My partner and I are desperate to leave our 1 bed council flat, I'm in employment and earn a reasonable salary and the property itself is need of some major repairs, I have carried a fair bit minor ones myself (I dont even bother ringing our council for these).

We looked at shared ownership and the housing association concerned have massively overvalued thier property and it wont sell at it's current price - the inference is that Housing Associations are not concerned with moving people on or providing 'affordable home ownership' but covering thier costs. To rent privately is not an option as a 2 bed flat with limited security is over £1000 a month in London (over 50% of my salary) , so what choice does an individual have other than stay in council housing ?

When a 2 bed ex council flat is a quarter of a million pounds there is something very very wrong in the housing market.

come on give me a break. i have friends in london who rent at those prices in walthamstow for 3b (large bedrooms) with BIG garden and 2 reception rooms nearfor 1100 and u r telling me 2b flats cost the same???

knew another person who lived in a studio flat between hangerlane and park royal almost on top of the station and was paying 500£ but this was a couple of years ago and i dont know the present rate there.

fully furnished (50" plasma screen, home theatre, leather sofas, projector etc)extremely large house with very very large garden with numerous trees was just this month rented by my friend for 1400£ between croydon mainline and another metro station (cant remember the name)

For the record, I live with my OH and child in a 2 bed flat (very small one at that) in London and we are paying almost £1,100. Obviously it depends on the area and this is quite a nice one. Just down the road you can get a flat in a less salubrious area for £700-800 per month.

That IS good value. I used to pay £750 month as a lodger in Surrey Row, SE1. Still miss Bankside living, pottering along to the market on Lower Marsh. Of course getting a cab to go south of the river was a nightmare.

I think the answer to council house shortage should be to stop the encouragement of young girls, who think they have little hope, to get pregnant by showering them with benefits. They should be encouraged into higher education or work.

Go back 40 years and see council estates full of hard working but perhaps lowly paid families who took pride in their surroundings and had a sense of commumity, compare that to now. Their must be a reason for this, I suspect a good part of it is what I've already said.
