full time student being taxed...how can i claim it back without a P45?

hi,
this is my first post and hope i am in the right place. i'm 20 and have just started a new job in which i only work weekends however i am at college full time and am being taxed.

i would like to claim this back although i have spoke to many people and my new manager who say i need a P45 to claim back the tax however i did not recieve this when i left my last job only a cheque through the post with my last 2 weeks wages.

is there any way i can claim back the tax without having a P45?

thanks in advance for any help.

when you started your new job presumably you filled in a P46 and so your employer should have put you on 603L wk1 ... so unless you are earning more than 502 per month you shouldn't be paying any tax.

what is your tax code ?

otherwise write to the HMRC, list each job you have had since april and your earnings and ask them to issue the correct tax code.

Just a point to remember. Being a full time student does not exempt you from paying tax.

If you earn less than the personal allowance of £6035 you will not pay tax - if you earn more you will.

Tell your employer that you need to fillin a P46 as you do not have a P45.

Some employers don't actually realise this point because they are so used to having a p45 handed to them.

once you've filled that in it may taske some time but you should end up getting some (if not all) the tax paid back... presuming you have no other taxable income during the year

To claim back though you need an R40 form. Google ftw.

i calculated my earnings and am not over the personal allowance either so should definitely not be getting taxed but thanks.
  • like the others have said, fill in a P46. If you are still on the BR code 28 days after filling in the P46, contact your tax office. Tell them you have fillid in a P46 and you are still on the wrong code after 28 days (they will ask if it has been 28 days which is their average working time for these things).

Ask them to put you on the correct cumulative code and to issue it to your employer. You should then get a tax refund hopefully.
