Mouse won't move curser.

I am having trouble with the mouse on my Dell dimension 4500 pc. The arrow gets stuck in the task bar and I have to switch the computer off at the main button as I can't close down properly without the arrow. It then works for a while. Any ideas please.

    Is it a cordless mouse?

Mine doesn't move when the batteries fail.

Also, instead of switching computer off at the mains (aiie!) you can always use the keyboard to shut down, if you need to.

Press the "flying windows key" (between Ctrl and Alt) to get the start menu up, use the directional arrows to highlight the Shut Down option, hit enter, press the "U" key to turn off safely.

There could be numerous things causing this. Is the mouse optical, and if so, is the red light still on underneath when it stops working?

    My main guesses are:

    1) Software issue: Something is causing the computer to freeze / use 100% CPU. In which case you need to run antispyware checks, like malwarebytes.

    2) Hardware issue / overheating - take the side off the case and look for dust around the CPU / Graphics fan

If you get a response from the computer when using the keyboard however, then both of my suggestions are likely wrong. :)

  • Thankyou Vyseyboy I knew there must be another way to shut the computer down but I forgot it. The mouse is optical and the red light was on. It ok at the moment but I will run a spyware check.
