Irregular Shift Pattern.. Second job?

Not sure if this is the right thread or anyone can help!

I work 6 days on, 3 days off in my main job... and within that, it is quite an irregular shift pattern.

I am looking for a second job, preferably in a supermarket. I have a feeling that you have to work set hours every week, which I won't be able to do. Does anyone know if I could show them the days I can work, they would be able to offer me those hours?

Or any other suggestions? I have tried bar work but failed miserably at it! Just need an extra job for a few months to get back on track with finances.

Thanks :o

Since you mentioned bar work I was wondering if your evenings are free? Some supermarkets will offer twilight shifts if thats the case.

I personally used to work shifts in a shop by day, with a second job in a nightclub cloakroom(cloakrooms are far easier than bars!) on weekend nights. It's not ideal and was quite tiring at the weekend if i was in the shop all day friday, club on fri night, shop again all day saturday then club again saturday night, phew!- I needed a lazy day on sundays and loads of coffee! Not so bad if its only for a few months but its not something you'd want to do permanently.

Also, have you looked into mystery shopping or party planning?
Owing to financial constraints, the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off until further notice. :(

If you dont get anywhere with the supermarkets directly have you considered temporary staffing agencies? They tend to recruit labour on a day by day basis (certainly when I have used them for catering/hotel/bar type work in the past). The jobs will be pretty unskilled but you should have more influence over your hours.

Jessicamb - I work shifts and have a second job with my local Social Services as a Casual Community Support Worker - working with adults in supported living environments when the shifts they have meet with my shift pattern. I've done it for 9 years and it's so rewarding. I get paid circa £7.51 an hour, £31 to sleep in at a house and approx £9.50 an hour for a waking watch (staying up all night to support person with needs if they waken). Is this something that could interest you ? I class this as my hobby, it's nothing like work for me, although it can be demanding, but like I say very rewarding. Will gladly let you know more if you are interested.

  • I did email an agency with no response... I guess I should just get my bum into their offices and talk to them face to face! I thought that might be a better option as I can tell them my days off in advance.

My shifts are anything from starting at 5am to finishing at 4am the following morning, not including delays, which means it's very difficult to do anything on a regular weekly basis.

Nightclub cloakroom is ok, but I don't get every weekend off and I could be working lates, or earlies (which is anything from 5am onwards!)

Done party planning before, which was good but I ran out of contacts quite quickly and it's a struggle getting parties when you have exhausted contacts!

My aim for this week is to get into a temp agency and talk to them, and ask about odd hours at my local supermarket!

    Thanks for the advice :D

  • Hi Dollie

I already have a criminal record check which was carried out last year for my current job. Would this help me get into that line of work?

Can you PM me more details pls?

psychopathbabble (hope you're not a psycho cos you won't get a job like this if you are lol) The company you're working for will probably want to do a police disclosure of their own. I don't think they're transferrable. The company you work for should pay for it though. You'll need an advance search - not sure if Scotland is different though. I do this job as relief. This is better for me because of family commitments I can say no if i'm not able to work. I just don't get paid. But I could have as much hours as I want if I was willing.
