The price of a stamp and maybe recorded delivery.

If HMRC are charging penalties and interest then they will increase whilst you wait on your appeal being considered.

LOl because I don't agree I owe the tax. They have their opinion and I have mine and in this case they don't coincide.

Depends what you are appealing against - is it a Self Assessment calculation or an 'informal tax calculation'.

A bit more info as to why you disagree would be helpful so further advice can be offered.

I think a "self assessment calculation". Basically they think I have missed a capital gain declaration a couple of years back. I have done eveything I can to show I have not and I think we are going to disagree on our view of that. They have not issued their assessment yet ,but I'm pretty sure the guy intends to do so. I'm not going through war and peace on the background as it makes no difference here as to whether they are right or wrong. I'm just trying to get info on what I need to do when they take the next step and issue the assessment. It's ironic that if I make an appeal to disagree with them they increase penalties or that is my take on the earlier post. So much for democracy.Thanks.

From the sounds of it then, an enquiry has been made into a past years tax return. When this is concluded a closure notice will be issued stating how much tax HMRC think you are due and your appeal rights should be explained to you at that point.

If you do appeal then this will probably require attendance at a Commisioners hearing but remember where you and HMRC present your 'evidence'

    Thanks for that info.
Who are the commissioners ? Other tax people ? How do they decide where to hold the appeal ,or is thereone place in the country where this happens?
    Thanks again for your help.

They are an independent appeals body (soon to be renamed). You can elect to have any hearing close to your home or workplace - likely to be nearest large town.
