Could I claim ?

Just found out all 6 of my nieghbours are in band C but I am band D all our houses are identical however 3 years ago two of us had a loft conversion to our properties and now have a information note on our bands to say due to improvement we may be reassessed if the property is sold. So the two of us have extensions that are exactly the same yet one is still band c and I am band D. I think that if I ask for reasessment I may well come out as Band D due to the extension however it still means that until the extension was built and until a reassessment I should have been in band C. Do you think I can claim the back date for this or will they just say well tough you are in the right band now. Also if I was in the wrong band will they only pay till the extension was built or until I am reassessed? Bit complex I know so I am asking for your thoughts Thanks

I know that claims can be backdated for a number of years. Have you got anything to lose by making a claim? If not give it a go.0

The worst that could happen would be that all your neighbours are increased to Band D. More likely that your band is wrong and extension (providing you do not live in Wales and it was carried out prior to 1 April 2005) should not be taken into account, and band reduction would be backdated to 1 April 1993 (or current effective date if house built after this date). If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
