42" LG Plasma Television in Tesco £499 plus clubcard points

In the Blackpool Tesco there are 42" Plasma TVs for only £499. As luck should have it I received my clubcard statement las week with a double points voucher. This should give me an 1,000 points worth £40, alos paid by Teso credit card to get additional points.

The telly is fantastic and a big (very big) change from my old 26".

Model is LG42PG6000, googling it seems to come up with lots of foreign sites so I couldn't find too much about it but for the price who cares!

    Welcome to MSE,
LG is of similar quality to Samsung and a little below Panasonic and some Sonys.

Bargain, though your electricity bill may go up a bit.

Amazon sell it for around £600.

I had heard that plasma was not as good as LCD but couldnt really work out why. For the money I was happy to take the risk. Thanks for the tip on electricity, I'll make sure the kids switch off when they are not watching it.

What you heard is probably common myth. There's allsorts flying around like "it needs refilling with gas".

Some LCDs are better than plasmas and vice versa. It depends what you mean by 'better'.

If you are looking at TVs 32" or less you will only have the choice of LCD. Over 32", for SD (normal broadcast and normal DVD) then in general plasma gives a more natural picture and is generally better on fast moving pictures (e.g. football). LCDs have been catching up on this though.

Plasmas use more electricity, need transporting upright and are heavier. They can also suffer from image retention when the same image is displayed on the screen for a period of time and in extreme cases it can cause screen burn (permanent damage). Because of this LCDs are more suited for games players where it is easy to leave the same screen up (or for example cockpit of a racing car) for extended periods. This screen burn has been greatly reduced with newer models but the scare stories remain. In many a shopping arcade you will see that their monitors for adverts are plasma.... and that is still the way I would go for normal TV viewing (and for value v picture would probably still stick to Panasonic).
