how can I improve my credit score helllppp!

last year I had a few probs and a few things didn't get paid on time, ect ect I was passed on to a credit collection service through a mobile contract, which has benn paid off for over a year.
For the last year I have done well and everything has been paid on time and started working last october(just over a year), I have got my credit card down so I pay off my purchases every month and have done for about 7 months now. I have a catalogue debt that I pay £50-150 off every month with only a couple of months until that has been paid in full.
Is there any further way I can improve my score, as I want to open another current account and have had my application refused for the bank I wanted to go with.
Does it just take more time or can I do anything else to speed up the process.
It's really getting me down as I cant improve anything further until I have a better score. thanks in advance
frey

Firstly Well Done for cutting you debts so far!

Unfortunately the debts that have been defaulted will probably be recorded on your credit file and will stay there for 6 years :( and therefore being 'choosy' with which bank you wish to have a current account with is not really available to you (or me to be honest lol)

BUT another way to improve your credit history is to get a credit card that is aimed at people with poor credit histories ie Capital One Classic card, Barclay's Initial, Accucard.. with a low limit set and a high APR (usuallu 29.9%) use the card wisely and pay it off in full each month...so no interest is charged ;)

Also...you could try a few other banks for a 'Basic' bank account...usually a banking account with facility for direct debits/standing orders a cashpoint card with Electron or Solo facility but NO cheque book or cheque guarantee card....

I went with Abbey had a basic account for 6 mths or so..ran it well... then was offered an upgrade to a full current account with chequebook, a 'multifunction' card (visa and cheque guarantee card) and an overdraft  :j

I believe Halifax do the same, and maybe HSBC im sure others will be along and let you knwo some more info

    Hope this info helps
