You need to look at your recipt or any invoice you may have received from Landy. Have they got a website at all? I can have a quick look on there.

  • have you still got the original packaging with the customs label on it? You need to check what it says on there and what value is showing on it.

If you paid more than £30ish (not sure on current cut off for customs charges) then you may well be liable for customs duty.

Check with DHL as well and see if they can give you an explanation as I would have thought they would have wanted payment before they delivered it. I got stung once for some things from America and I had to go and collect it from the sorting office as Royal Mail won't deliver before payment.

  • I've heard from other forums that some brides have been charged after delivery for custom duty.
I think they check every now and again parcels labelled as 'gifts' etc.
The girls are right, check the customs label on your parcel, the 'duty' should be no more than 30% of the declared value (17.5% VAT plus 12% custom duty) and also check with DHL.
    Good Luck!

    Here's the info you need:

    http://www.dhl.co.uk/publish/gb/en/information/shipping/about_duty_and_vat.high.html

You will have been charged 17.5% VAT if the value of the merchandise was over £18, plus DHL will have charged you a 2% admin fee. If the admin fee was higher than this (e.g. they have charged you the £10 minimum fee for business customers) then you should take up the matter with DHL.

So is it pretty much hit or miss whether you get charged for customs or not then?

It's just I am going to order my dress form them in Feb and wonder if I should put away an extra 30% just in case

  • I wasn't charged on mine and I think from memory that they put cleaning cloths on the customs form.

I would have been prepared to pay on mine anyway as I'd saved £800 on the original price.

you're right, it is a luck of the draw situation & you'd be wise to set aside the extra cash just in case

any time I want anything from abroad costing more than £17.99 I always ask myself if I'd be prepared to pay the extra, if the answer's yes, I go ahead & order, then if the goods get through un-inspected I look upon it as a bonus :)
  • I got a voicemail from DHL the day before my dress arrived, assumed it would be something to do with customs, when I called them back the guy just said 'he was calling about a $40 dress? Doesn't matter its been cleared now anyway' So not sure what that means?
  • It means it will be with you tomorrow or the day after :)

I bought loads of stuff off ebay.com and got charged at customs and it came the next day

  • Thanks Steph, got the dress yesterday ( :D ) So does that mean I wont get charged any more?x
