Wescot chasing a debt from 12 years ago

Hi All,
I've just received a letter from Wescot trying extort a debt. Am I correct in thinking that the debt is statute barred? Basically I was only 18 when I ran up a catalogue bill, I never did pay the debt off, Im now 31
I guess Freemans and/or debt collector hounded me for the money back then (over 12 years ago) up until around 1996.
Since 2003 I've a clean slate on my credit file and have always paid my creditors on time (A1 Credit) and regularly subscribe to Experian. I have never defaulted on any account or received any debt collection letters until now.
I get the impression that Wescot have bought the debt cheaply from elsewhere and trying to get me to pay up.
There a bit in the letter that makes me think that they are trying it
"Our recent enquires lead us to believe that you are still resident at the above address"
Should I just ignore it as it statute barred? - I've just checked my online credit report and there haven't been any searches by Wescot.
Advice greatly appreciated
Many thanks

I think there's a template letter around to deal with this type of claim, someone should have a link to it, I know my m-i-l got one and sent the letter and got an apology in writing.0

Fermi has given you the advice you require
Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.
All information given by myself is offered informally and without prejudice - if in doubt seek help from a qualified and insured professional0 -
I thought if they didnt contact you within 6 year's there was nothing they could do it was out of date
Not an expert though0
