  • My friend had her baby at the new unit of the Ulster a year ago and it was fantastic. I don't have personal experience of the maternity unit but recently had an op and was in ward 8. The staff and the cleanliness were absolutely 1st class.

i had my wee girl in the ulster and have to say most of the staff were good, but i also had some bad experiences in there to but nothing dratsic enough for me not to go back, i think its like everywhere really, and they try there best
has been around for a while but always learning,
  • thank you all for your feedback- i was so worried but was really good of you all to take time out to reply.
Went up yesterday and god love the poor midwife i waswith- she said hello and tears came to my eyes.
Anyway, i found everyone to be really nice from the women who carried out the tests to the consultant. Its so daunting and takes so long but v thorough and they explained everything as well as they could to some one who spent most of time biting nails and manically staring at them lol
    THanks again:j
  • Hi Everyone

I am also dreading the consultation itself! I am really hoping I am not going to meet a horrible doc or midwife - cos I have been waiting so long to see someone, and I am afraid that if they are horrible, I will become like the incredible hulk!!!!!

Might seem wierd this comming from a bloke but I was there at all appointments and delivery of both our bambino's and though no Expert. I do have a few views on it all.

    1. The consultations may seem scary, but don't go into it with this mindset, try to relax.. go prepared.. do some reading before hand be it books or the internet.. if you have questions, write them down as you think of them in the days before the consultation as guaranteed you'll forget them otherwise and then two days after you'll remember them and be kicking yourself that you forgot to ask the consultant.

    2. If the consultant is a bit scary, don’t panic (I know sometimes easier said than done) Don't let the consultant bully you into doing something that you don’t agree with or you don’t know about for that matter. Ask them for information on what they are proposing, any alternatives and tell them you want time to think about it and you will discuss it at next consultation.
((example. Our first baby was a real hard delivery for my wife.. Vacuum & forceps… at second she was told by the consultant she should have a sectarian.. as she “wouldn’t” be able to go naturally… Bo**ocks… she had a perfectly natural birth.. no anaesthetist required.. Not even a stitch… So much for the consultants “view

    3. Generally the midwives are very very good.. But due to staff shortages & them being overworked. It can be a bit hit and miss some times as to how "good" they are. My wife found some very good and very patient but did come across some who were what I'd call "Box Tickers" eg. one lady in the bed beside my wife wanted to brest feed but was finding it hard.. she really wasn't given much support by the midwife looking after her and was basically told to "give the baby a bottle since you're having so much difficutly".. my wife was horrified... (again maybe it's just that they don't have the time to spend helping you out)

I have to say in all the service was very good and you really can't fault them in many ways but I believe the secret is as the cub scouts say "BE PREPARED". Don't believe everything you hear.. investigate things yourself and try to make informed decisions and be willing to challange anything you don't agree with.. Always ask questions if you are not sure what they are talking about and don't be intimidated by them if they are being a bit pushy... Be strong!!

    Just my views anyway....
