National Insurance Credits

Hello all

I recently recieved a letter from HM Revenue and Customs stating that I haven't paid any National Insurance in 2006/2007.

The reason that I didn't make any payments was that I was in full time education (undertaking a University Masters Degree course).

The letter mentions that in certain circumstances, you can be credited for NI, providing that you were undertaking an "approved training course". I have googled to try and find out what comprises an approved training course, but have not had any luck.

Does anyone out there know how I find out whether the course I was attending comprised an approved training course or not?

Thanks in advance.

Andy

You wont get NI credits for doing a masters - the approved courses are YT courses etc - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/nimmanual/NIM41220.htm
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Thanks for the information CIS, I would imagine that you are right, but could you bear with me (and satisfy my sense of curiosity)?

The link says over 18 when starting the course, must be more than 20 hours per week, must be less than 12 months and must be not in line with the normal "work" of the customer ( ). I think that these criteria would have been met, although I am not sure about the work thing.

So I guess it's really just the statement " training approved by the Secretary of State" that I don't meet?

Thanks for your help with clearing up my confusion!

    Kind Regards

    Andy
