What is the best way of buying or making yogurt that is both cheap and nutritious

hi, as you can see i have 4 children, 3 of which eat 2-3 pots of yogurts each a day!which means i go through rather a lot in a week! I was buying the basic packs of 4 for 29p, but they are so sweet, and i imagine not particulary high in calcium, unless anyone can tell me differently. Im just assuming! Can anyone tell me if they make it any cheaper? or for around the same cost?
many thanks

  • Hi there,
I had the same problem as you!
Making yogurt is very easy and there are threads on here which explain it in detail. I'm not sure how to do you a link I'm afraid.
I make a litre of organic yogurt for £1. By heating a litre of organic milk (99p) up to almost a boil then letting it cool to body temp (ish) about 38 degrees c. I use my children's thermometer to check temp. Then mix in a tablespoon of plain organic yogurt (the rest can be frozen in an ice cube tray and used as needed) and pour it into a flask which takes just a litre. Put the lid on then leave it overnight. I usually put it in the flask about 9pm and take it out when we get up at 6-7am. It should have thickened up nicely but if you like it thicker you can mix in a tablespoon of dried skimmed milk powder before you put it in the flask.
For the kids I add tinned (drained) fruit which has been put through my blender. Cheap tinned peach slices are very nice and tinned strawberries make it into a muller fruit corner!
Healthier, tastier and I should think about the same price as the ones you are buying.
    Hope that helps.
