  • miseter,

If I read your message correctly - it would probably be better to re-post in Cutting Tax forum.

I do not know of any specific reason for a working 16 year old to have a tax rebate on turning 17.

One case could be that at 17 you may go in to full time education and will not be working and thus can claim back any income tax paid because you have not earned more that the personal allowance (£4895) during the present tax year.

Additionally, whilst working at 16 you may have been on emergency tax code thus will be paying too much.

    Regards,
    John

Everyone is liable to pay tax, regardless of age. However, you get your personal allowance which for most people is currently in the region of £4,875 per year. If you don't go over that, your pay will remain tax free. You can however have tax deducted if in a particular month you earn more than one twelfth of your personal allowance. You can get this back in subsequent pay if it is low enough. If you end up paying tax because you work a couple of months (for example) and go over the limit, but do not work again in that tax year, you can reclaim the tax paid as you will not have reached the total of your annual allowance.

Yes, if you are on an emergency tax code. Check your pay slip. Personal tax allowance for a single person is presently £4895 - and should appear as 489L on your pay slip.

When did you start work, ie before or significantly after 5 April 2005?

During the 12 months of a tax year the personal tax allowance is spread evenly over the 12 payments or even 52 weeks if paid weekly.

If you then stop working because of becoming a student the tax allowance is then applied over only the working months - in essence your allowance increases for those working months!

Alternatively, there may be an issue with National Insurance contributions - but this can be very complicated and, again, one of the other forums may produce more informed answers.

My advise when you get your P60 send it to the inland revenue, they will check if you are owed any taxback and send you a nice cheque if you are. Cost to you, at stamp.
