Snowman cake from a mould....

I bought a silicon snowman mould from Lidl last week - I bake a lot but have never used a moulded shape before, I've always cut my own cakes to shape. I was thinking it would be a nice alternative to CHristmas cake, but now that I'm thinking about it I don't know what to cover it in. If I put ganache or buttercream on it will cover all the details, won't it? What do people usually do with this kind of cake, do you just sprinkle icing sugar over the top?

when i've made these type of cakes for birthdays,i've used a star nozzle and piped the design with that, with various colours. Using buttercream
I don't know if youve seen what i mean but if you google snowman cake in images the first one is done that way

I recently made an circus elephant cake for my daughters 2nd birthday. I covered it with buttercream and then used various colours of sugarpaste for the details. Really made the cake stand out.0

OK toomuchness, I see what you mean. I've seen that kind of cake before but it's never really been my thing - I'm a sugarpaste fanatic! However, it does look good on that snowman so maybe I'll do it that way.
Purplemunchkin, I love my sugarpaste too! I've got tonnes lying around as I make cakes as a sideline for a local deli.
I feel all Christmassy now.0 -
I made one of these last year! I also made a christmas tree cake too.
I will dig out a photo for you later. Not being an expert icer, I cheated and used bought block icing which I left white to cover him with, then bought some green and red icing pens which I used to colour in his hat, eyes, scarf and then painted some yellow food colouring on his nose.
I found some great minature snowmen iced charms which I put along the bottom of the board he was sitting on.
I have never attempted anything like this before and was really chuffed to be honest!!!
My friends kids thought it was the best! Under 5's are easy to please!;)Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Wow that sounds great having a little sideline like that - at the moment i make a few christmas cakes for friends and family and would love to do more - although saying that i can just about cope with the few xmas cakes i do make LOL0 -
Yes, it's a nice hobby-turned-business, though it can be a pain at times - like tongiht for example, when I need to make 30 cupcakes for the deli and another 12 for a cafe, three different bases and three different frostings, plus handmade decorations from sugarpaste/gumpaste..... and I would rather just sit down with a glass of wine and watch crap telly!0

Sarah, it sounds like you are an expert. I am not an expert in any shape or form but still impressed the under-5's with my efforts.:D
Here are my cakes I made using the snowman and christmas tree moulds from Lidl last year (please be kind!)
Knowing my limitsI used sugar glitter on the Christmas tree with shop bought Christmas presents over HM white icing made from egg whites. The snowman is covered in shop bought block icing and coloured using icing pens.
Hopefully it will show people who haven't attempted anything like this before that fairly presentable results can be achieved!!!!Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!
