Cannot afford to pay phone contract

Hi

I could do with some advice regarding my mobile phone contract which i took out in August 08 for 18months. This is my first contract phone and unfortunately, I lost my job and I am finding it a challenge to get a new job, therefore I cannot afford to pay the phone bills. About a month ago, O2 cut me off, but for the foreseeable future I cannot see me being able to pay the bills. My bank overdraft has also reached its limit. I just wondered if anyone has had this problem, and managed to come to an agreement with the phone company and can give me advice on how to tackle O2. I really would like to go back to a pay as you go sim. Any ideas on how much it is likely to cost me to get out of my contract or is there a way i can freeze the phone until i can start paying?

I hope someone can help!

    Hi

Sorry to hear about your job. I'm not 100% sure on all of this, but did you get a phone with the contract?

If you did, it would be best to speak to them and ask them if sending back the phone would cancel out the contract.

I know that *most* contracts are legally binding making it hard for people to get out of them without paying the remaining months rental amount (18 x the amount you would pay per month).

I would suggest contacting the national debtline www.nationaldebtline.co.uk to see if they can help?

    Sorry im not much help.

  • yes i did get a phone with the contract.
I'll have to work out how much its likely to come to then and go into the shop and see if they can better it i guess.
    thankyou for your advice.

If you got the phone with the contract I would definitely suggest just giving that back as thats generally what they want to charge for.

You could then pick up a cheap PAYG for a lot lot less.
