not another uniform question!

hi all

have searched for answer to this but cannot find so please advise.

i am very keen to claim back my uniform cleaning allowance, my problem being i have worked for 4 firms in last 6 years, all requiring a uniform and all with different tax offices, do i send a respective letter to each tax office and split the amount requested for refund due pro-rata? or do i sent 1 letter in total to my currect employer;s tax office?

many thanks:confused:

If possible the basis of your claim should be what your job is. You should therefore write and claim the fixed rate deduction for your trade. If you dont have a recognised trade, then you need to write and state that you were required to wash your uniform at home for A, B and C employers (for instance). None of it is pro-rata's - the allwoance is given for the whole year.
You write to your current tax office only.

We got a reply 3 weeks ago from tax re my husbands uniform. He was awarded £60 a year which they have backdated 3 years. They have altered his tax code to 630L and what he is due for this year they have paid back through his wages. On the form it says +205 owed to him. I assume the amount for past years will be sent in a cheque??????????
  • You should write to your current tax office as they are the only ones who can access your record. They will have a record of your previous jobs with possible exception to any jobs in the 05-06 tax year as there were issues with the records for that year.

Explain that in each job you had to wash a logo'd uniform which was required for work and would like to claim the flat rate expense amount for each year.

They will do the same to you as they did to sheilavw and issue you with a repayment for previous years and increase your tax code for this year.

my husband only got £28 back in last weeks wages cos his code his now 630L backdated to April. However, in our letter they have gone back to 05/06 and said we are owed £205. I would assume the rest will come in a cheque. He rang tax office and they said allow 2 to 3 weeks for any cheques due. Im a bit worried that they have adjusted his code and wont bother reimbursing him....

I have sent my 2nd job tax office two letters asking about Uniform tax and have heard nothing back, what should I do next?

  • Any letters you send should go to the tax office who deal with your main employment only as other tax offices can not access your record.

Sheilavw you do not need to worry, your hubby will receive a check for the previous years and it will take a week or two to arrive. The adjustment in his code and the amount reimbursed to him in his recent pay is correct also. His tax code has gone up by about 270 allowances which at 20% (basic rate tax) will be £55-£60 for the year. As his last pay was just after half way through the tax year, he was reimbursed half of that which is the £28 he received.

Catty212 you would be better off phoning the HMRC contact centre. Tax offices sometimes have a large backlog of post, even larger round about this time of year due to self assessment tax returns.
