I'd have preferred them to give their creditors a handout, or caught up on mortgage arrears, or the council tax arrears which is what I am actively trying to persuade them to do before the money vanishes. I most certainly don't begrudge them winning money which is how you make it sound, I just want them to get back on their feet but I feel that they need to learn to do it for themselves, not with a handout. We do whatever we can for them (servicing their car for free type of stuff) not giving them money (that we could ill afford to do anyway) which we know will go on take-aways or rubbish.

They seem to think that giving the money to the CCCS to share amongst their creditors is a 'waste' but they might catch up with the mortgage and CT.

Why don't you ask the government to hold public sessions where you can all go through the credit card bills and decide if the person who lost their job or their husband died has had too many luxuries in their life... I don't like scroungers any more than the next person but some of the posters on this thread are unbelievably smug. Probably living on unearned income or if not I hope you have it all insured because if it all goes wrong you won't find and sympathy from your fellow posters here.

His name is from the Old Testament (or Torah) but isn't Ebeneezer.

Before we got together, he'd almost never spend Christmas-time in the UK - the family used to go to Israel instead.
