Okay, who else can't pay their Tax Bill ?

After worrying about it for too long I have finally drummed up the courage to write to HMRC today and say that there is no way that we can pay DH tax Bill due in January 2009. Exactly this week last year the housebuilders in our area just stopped building and DH being in the trade, lost his job. We managed to pay January 08 bill as we put away the money the year leading up to it but this last year has seen his run of work stop and start too much and we are living on the edge still. Hence no way have we been able to save for the tax bill. We have gone onto a DMP with Payplan, parents have just helped out with our mortgage arrears this month and Christmas looks less inviting by the day.
So we are dreading the reply from the Tax Man and we are gearing up for a bumpy ride. Anyone else in the same situation???

Sorry, I know nothing - but thought I'd give you a bump to the top of the board.
You could try the tax board and see if folks on there can give you any help
Otherwise you could try contacting www.nationaldebtline.co.uk and see if they can give you some helpful advice on how to handle this, you may be able to set up some sort of repayment plan with them.£34,547 (Dec 07); Current debt: £zilch (Debt free December 2010)

There is a section of www.direct.gov.uk if you search on what to do if you can't pay your tax bill.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0

Hi there bluediamond
Me and my DH are in exactly the same position we have an outstanding 5000 bill I have spoken to the tax person who has been more than helpful, at the moment we are paying 100 p/m I don't know how long this will continue for. I have to speak to them again soon but I keep putting it off even though they have been really helpful they scare the hell out of me.
The best thing you can do is ring them they are much more helpful if you approach them. Hope that makes you feel a bit better.

https://www.taxaid.org.uk is often suggested as being very helpful.

To all of you who have replied, thanks so much. Gettingsorted, I am sure there are more like us lurking out there who are gonna be in debt to the tax man but who is to say that the tax man is going to help. Afterall, they are faster at getting money in than they are at paying it out but I have sent the letter now and will wait for the reply. Will have a look at TaxAid too (thanks Fermi ! )0

Perhaps I'm being too simplistic (it is a habit of mine  ) but if his earnings have been greatly reduced by lack of work then his tax bill should be reduced too.
I'd do as getting sorted suggests and give them a phone, maybe it won't be as bad as you think
.
Good luck,
Sam,

Hiya
Is the tax that is due in January the final payment for 07-08 or is it a payment on account for year 08-09??
We are in a similar situation, DH is a builder and work has been very scarce, we have a £1700 bill to pay end of Jan and are still hoping to be able to scratch the money together, with having a cheap Christmas, but its touch and go.
If its a payment on account you owe in jan then I imagine you could get it reduced or even cancelled if he isn't working.
Good luck to you, its a frightening time of year for builders at the best of times let alone in this credit crunch. Just know that you ar'nt on your own.

We are in exactly the same situation with £1000 to find plus a mortgage of £1000 per month to pay! We also have debt of £2,500 luckily reduced from £14,000 in January last. This large debt partly came from a tax bill of £6,000 last year. Fortunately its not so steep this year or Id really be pulling my hair out. My OHs cheques from work keep bouncing and his job is touch and go. His boss has a major cash flow problem and its not going to get any better anytime soon. Lets hope the future holds better things for all of us.
What I did last year was I took out an MBNA 0% credit card and used one of their cheques to pay the tax bill. If you can manage to get a cc with them its quite good as their 0% is quite long and it means you can pay the bill off completely and pay the credit card off over a long period of time. They issue cheques all the time. Otherwise I think the Inland Revenue do charge quite high interest for outstanding unpaid tax.The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
Hi
I think with the tax office is that if you come to an agreement stick to it because if you don't they do demand full payment so if you are in this position only agree to a payment amount that you can afford.0
