Had a furious disagreement with Egg CC because they paid out on an out of date card. This is part of the message they sent back:"
"Under Visa regulations if a subscription attempts to call on a closed card we are legally obliged to accept the transaction and you would be liable for the balance on the account."
This surely isnt right???? They got me into a load of unpaid charges because it was an online account & as I had changed my email address I didnt even get any reminders until someone with a brain cell sent me a letter.
Does this mean we can all get into loads of debt without knowing?

It is right that those awful subscription things continue even on out of date cards (ie. cards that have expired rather than been closed) - I have been stung before. You have to cancel direct with the company.
However if the bulk of the debt is charges and interest on charges I would send the reclaim letter off and go via the ombudsman if necessary to get all this back.
Good luck.0
