Is this affecting my credit rating?!

I moved into my property 6/7 years ago.
The previous occupier had got into money troubles, and ever since then I have received payment reminders, final warnings and even the odd knock at the door!
All has been quiet for the past few months and today I opened a letter to find that it was actually addressed to the previous occupier....at my address.
The letter was a confirmation of a successful loan application.
What I need to know is; if he has been applying for loans against my address, would this be potentially having an adverse affect on my own credit score?
I do not have any forwarding address or contact number for him as he appears to jump from rental to rental.
In the past, I have had to contact the loan companies and explain the situation so they do not proceed with anything against my address, but how long do I have to keep doing this?! It's been over 6 years now!
I have contacted the police advice line but all they suggest is to contact for example 'experian' or 'equifax' to keep checking my score, but this costs me money - which I think is unfair.....

My apologies for the rant! Can anyone advise me?!

Thanks
Charlie :female:

    Hi Charlie.

    I couldn't believe what I read - what a nightmare. I can't provide proper advice but I do have a few suggestions:
Contact the company and tell them that you opened the mail by mistake. Confirm that the person no longer lives at that address and has not done so for some time.
Have you checked the electoral roll - are they still on it. Make sure that they are removed.
Do you live in a flat with communal space - is there a possibilty that the previous owner could be getting access? If so speak to your neighbours and maybe even consider changing the locks.

I wish you luck in getting it sorted.

  • Hi URG,

    Thanks for your help.
Up until now I have been contacting the companies, yes....however I haven't always opened the post so who knows what other applications he may have made in the past!

No, I do not live in a flat or communal space. All external doors have been changed since he lived here anyway so know probs there! phew

He is definitely not listed at this address on the electoral register either.
I wish these loan/credit companies had some sort of link to the register so they can actually see the applicants true address....would save a lot of people like me a lot of hassle!

    Thanks again,
    Charlie :female:

It won't affect your credit rating as long as it is not in your name. The address is no longer linked to a debt - only the individual. I would however think about notifying the car loan company. Or at least sending the letter back stating addressee no longer at this address.

To make sure there is nothing on your credit file you could request a copy (for £2 each) from the 3 credit reference agncies to make sure there is nothing that shouldn't be there. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/credit-rating-credit-score#your

How do you go about checking the electoral roll? I have a slight suspicion that someone is using my address for starting their business... even the council keeps sending invitations for business seminars.... grrr
Smile more often, it's FREE :hello: Live on £4000 for a year stalker! :p
  • Each year I get my form through from the local council - my name is the only one to have been listed on there since I moved in.
    Is this correct? ^^

Thanks, i'll look into that - seems a bit more reasonable than some of the others available!
