in Cutting tax
Hi, I have been trying to research this all day and have found no information to clear my predicament.
My girlfriend is a full time student and is exempt from paying council tax, she is in her final year of her veterinary science degree and I would like to go and stay with her as she is working extermely long hours and I believe I could help with cooking and cleaning etc.
I would like to know what restrictions there are on the amount of days I can stay per week, per month, or per year without it affecting her council tax exemption.
The local council is EPNBC (ellesmere port and neston borough council)
Thanks in advance
Dave

It won't affect her exemption, you would be liable for Council Tax if her home becomes your main residence. There is a frequent poster CIS who works for a council and hopefully he can give you a full explanationIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

What are your intentions? Do you intend to make this your permanent residence, if you do as per poster above, you will be liable for Council Tax, and only a 25% discount as your girlfriend will be disregarded.
If you can proove you still have a main residence elsewhere, ie do you pay Council Tax, and intend to keep that as your residence after her course has finished then there "shouldn't" be a problem. Corsagirl and Lincroft1710 are spot on, if you intend on making the property your 'sole or main residence' then you will be classed as resident at that property and therefore, assuming your girlfriend is currently the sole resident and the tenant/owner. then you will become solely liable for the full council tax due on the property with a 25% discount.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

My main residence is living with my girlfriends prents as I help them out. I don't pay council tax there but her parents do. When her course does finish we will be living with her parents until we find our feet job/house wise. She will be spending very little time at her rented accomodation. She has 4 more weeks before christmas and about 5 weeks after.0

You should be fine as long as your main residence is at the parents homeI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. Is there any official amount of days per week, month or year though that would class me as a visitor though? I don't want a council worker knocking on the door accusing me of tax dodging.

So you're not paying CT as you're living with GF's parents, and you're not paying CT because you're not living with you're GF. Where are you paying CT ?.................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 -
He doesn't need to pay if he lives with her parents - they are liable parties and he is an occupant of the property. Whether they ask him to make a payment towards it or not is their decision.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. residence is deter mined by several factors, location of belongings, where you receive your post, intention to return etc. The time you spend at an address is to a certain point, immaterial....pieandapint wrote: »Is there any official amount of days per week, month or year though that would class me as a visitor though?
