over payment of tax

I started a new job on 10th March 2008 and sent my P45 to my new employer, however this was 'lost' and was never received so I've been on tax code BR ever since. I finally got a P46 to fill and sent it back to my employer and my tax code was changed in my Oct pay to 603, however I didn't get any tax back for what I've overpaid. Am I due a rebate as I don't really fully understand how it all works. Angi

When code 603 was operated, you should have received a refund of tax overpaid since 6/4/08. if you have not, you need to ask your employer why.
For the year ended 5/4/08, you need to write to your tax office asking them to check for a repayment for the year.

  • Hi Angi,

With regard to your earnings since 6th April 2008: It could be that HMRC have issued you with the tax code of 603 Wk1/M1 rather than 603L.

The WK1/M1 bit stands for week 1/month 1 and it means that they would just pay you for that week/month in isolation and not take into account the previous periods pay and thus the fact that you have overpaid.

It's unusual for HMRC to issue this tax code to your employers if it's your only job but it may be the answer and it may be worth checking.

One other answer could be that HMRC issued the correct tax code but your employers are treating it as Wk1 or M1 thus not applying it properly and giving you the refund you are due.

    hope that makes sense!

If HMRC issued a Wk1/M1 code it could be because neither you nor your previous employer sent in your P45 details so they don't have them to pass on to your new employer to enable them to operate a cumulative code.

If you passed your P45 to your new employer did you give them all 3 pages or did you keep the top copy marked copy for employee? If you still have the top copy then send it to HMRC so they can adjust your code.

When did you fill in the P46 and which box did you select A or B?
