Beware of WH Smith 'small print'

I was going to purchase the Horrible Science Violent Volcano yesterday-as advertised in their Christmas catalogue-reduced to £4.99, down from £6.99.
At the till it came up as £6.99, so I questioned it, and pointed out the price in the catalogue. SA got 'supervisor' involved, and the upshot was, prices will vary from store to store, pointing to small print at the back of the catalogue, and £6.99 was their price! Didn't have my glasses so couldn't tell if she was right or not. She wouldn't budge so I said no thanks, I'll try elsewhere. I know its only a small amount, but its the principle of the matter.

I used to work at WH Smith. Avoid them ! Everything they sell is overpriced.
    They don't pay well either!

WH Smith's pricing has always appeared to me to be rather random and rarely inexpensive. Apart from fixed price items like magazines and newspapers I avoid them.

books are cheaper online, and their own brand pens always stop workign really randomly when there's still ink left in there :(

I could sya a lot of bad stuff about smiths... but I don't think I will
  • This is off subject a bit, but very similar.
Lot's of places, if you look online to buy something or adverts on the TV show a cheaper price than if you actually go into the shop.
The small print says when you order it from Guernsey because you don't have to pay VAT. So it's actually quite a bit dearer.

I agree; I know someone who used to work for them. And as for their prices; on CDs, DVDs and food/drinks items they're very expensive, unless you look for special offers/sales. I have had some good CDs for 99p even in the sale sometimes.
  • The Horrible Science kits are priced at £4.99/£5 in Asda
    November Grocery Challenge £500/£95
