Asset Collection company chasing debt from peson who doesnt live in our rented house

We have been in our property for approx. 3 months, and have been receiving letters for people who we presume lived here before.

As requested by the landlord, we have been sending them back saying 'not at this address'.

One came today and I could see under the front window that it ws from a Asset Collection company. I opened the letter to investigate.

Its for someone who doesnt live here, and as the house was renovated by the landlord before we rented it, i doubt it was someone who hasnt lived here for a while.

Do we keep on sending the letters back saying not at this address, or contact these people to notify them?

Is this something to let the landlord know about?

We are currently debt free and dont want any black marks against our names or risk us bad credit in the future when we may look for a mortgage.

The company is Asset Collection & Investigation Ltd.

Advice please?

Many thanks

M

PS. APologies for the cross post (i originally put this in the renting section, but thought it woul dbe better placed here)

DO NOT PHONE THEM . Just send them back with not known at this address .

What stapeley says. If you phone them you open a whole can of worms, and they may even try and bully YOU into paying the debt!

Just send it back with 'not known at this address' on the envelope - it does the same job as calling them, only you're not paying a premium rate phone call and risking further harrassment for the priviledge. If more letters come, lather, rinse, repeat... ;)

just received another letter for this person who doesnt live here.

told the postie that she didnt live here and asked should i just put "not at this address on it". his advices was that it probably wouldnt go back to the sender anyway and said i might as well throw it away.

I opened the letter, and it was from a solicitors, chasing £100 from this said person who doesnt live here on behalf of argos.

Do you think i should just call the solicitor and say that the person doesnt live here and they are unknown to us?

Should i just ignore it? If i do ignore it, what would happen to us?

Should i get the landlord involved?....dont really want to hassle them as they are pretty good.

    advise would be useful!
  • Hi, again do not phone anyone, just send it back as no longer at this address or such like.
I would get in touch with your landlord if it is stressing you out!! Although in saying that I dont know what the landlord would be able to do??
Also in future I would not open the post as I think (someone may correct me on this) this is illegal.

If there is a return address, then cross out your address, on the unopened letter and write on the return afddress and put it back in the box.

there was no return address on the envelope it was plain, and didnt look like a circular.

ive been doing the return to sender thing for months now, but they are still coming here.

the postie said most return to senders dont get redelivered anyway.

When there is a reply address, write it on rather than using return to sender.

    add redirected.

should i just return the opened letter back to the solicitor, or does that open a can of worms as i must have opened the letter to see their address?
  • I suppose you could be honest and tell them that you opened it so that you could send it back to them directly to make them aware that the person they are after no longer lives there and that you are the new tenant?

You never opened it to be nosey you opened it as you are fed up and worried that these debts are coming to your home!!

Try and not worry too much about it as it is not your debt to pay back.
