Tax code NT?

During the summer I worked on a casual basis for a university doing admin work; I have now received my payslips from this job and the tax code is NT.
Why have I got this tax code? I'm concerned because I am in the process of applying to be self employed (for occasional mystery shopping) and I'm worried that perhaps this work should be counted as self employed too because of the tax code? I won't earn over the threshold this year, I'm just concerned because of the 3 month deadline for registering.
FYI before the summer job I worked part time (8-12 hours a week) but my final earnings combined with the summer job still would not bring me over the threshold. My tax code for this job was 503L.
Thank you for reading
I think I'm just getting myself worried for no reason but thought I'd ask for advice.

Your tax code cannot have been both NT and 503L! I guess you signed a P38(s) to say your earnings would be below the threshold for this year. The Uni work was definitely not self employment. You should register as self employed now and you will complete a self assessment at the end of the year on which you will declare your Uni earnings as well as your self employed earnings.
You have nothing to worry about apart from keeping accurate records of your self employed earnings to enable you to make an accurate return.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
Sorry it was NT for the uni work and 503L for my other job, which I had for two years. (Although looking at my P45, it was 603L).
Thanks for the advice
