  • Can you record a playing dvd onto the hard drive? i.e. If I bought someone a dvd for Xmas, can I play it and record it onto the HD?

    Thanks.

I believe that you can only record that DVD if you use another dvd player like you will record inputs from camera etc. There is no functionality in this dvd recorder to record DVD to HD directly (using its own dvd player).

I hope that answers your question
  • Thanks arb007. I read a write up which states that the dvdr can only record directly from the hard drive i.e. you can't record onto dvd directly from TV.......please correct me if I'm mistaken.

    Yes, you are right
You can only record onto the HDD, but can copy required contents from HDD to DVD disk later on. You cannot record directly to DVD disk from TV

But it can record (from HD) on DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD +R Dual Layer dvds

Mine was dispatched yesterday, so I am looking forward to get it soon. I am tempted to see it working after reading good reviews on it
  • I'm tempted by the Samsung 2 in 1 Combination 80Gb Hard Drive & Progressive Scan DVD Recorder £272.28 which will allow me to record from the dvd to the hard drive (though the QVC advert does say that most pre-recorded discs will be protected).

Samsung 2 in 1 Combination recorder does not support DVD+RW or DVD+R
All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy.

Also Samsung 2 in 1 Combination ... records upto 40 hours on 80GB HDD, where as Philips can record upto 103 hours on the same size. OK the quality for longest recording may not be very good, but at least you have space to record something if required.

As well as the above there is no scart socket on the back of the Samsung.

    Se here

Isn't this a problem or am I missing something?

If you're going to do that I would definately recommend spending the extra £28 and buying the dvdhr725 from richer sounds. Also samsung. 160GB hard disk. HDMI output and also 2 scarts plus all the rest of the features. Can record direct to dvd. And so much more I haven't even read my manual yet. My only complaint is it seems a bit slow at responding to pressing buttons. Got mine for slightly more about 3 months ago.

    Hope this helps
