Trying to understand what I know I owe and what they say..

Hi all. I'm hoping some one can help.
I bought a car from car craft a few years ago, I took in my old car and wanted to trade up. I got a decent deal on a new car including a trade in for my old car paying off what was left on it.
I had a load of issuse with car craft as the car I was given turned out to be faulty and had to swap the car three times, each time they opened a new finance package and "forgot" to cancel the old one. This caused me stress but I manged to sort it out.
However a few months later I got a letter saying I had missed payments on my bridging loan. It turns out they had taken out a bridging loan to pay for the negative equity on the car, (£1,700).i've not made one payment towards this loan as it is something I can't afford. I was unawre I had signed anything for a loan aswell asnever being told one had been taken out!!
I have started to recieve letters about this debt now and the total ammount being requested by Gothia is £2600! Can they actually get you to pay more than you actually owe. I don't mind setteling the debt for what I owe but I refuse to pay more than what I should.
Does anyone have any ideas or tips on how I can proceed with this?
Thanks

Do the usual letter requesting details of all the financial transactions, do not acknowledge any of the debt at this point, and do not sign the letter - just print your name.
Check every piece or correspondence you have from them. If you have not signed up for a bridging loan, then you aren't liable for it. If they have taken out finance, that's their fault.
Additionally, if the cars have repeatedly being faulty (not fit for purpose) then you might want to get the financial ombudsman in on this.
Good luckSome days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....
