I know its not much help for you, but it is possible to live a pretty normal life and / or recover from brain damage. My granmother had severe brain damage after a car accident many years ago and recovered prettty much fully. And I have visible brain damage caused by head trauma - poor short term memory, occasional blackouts and on-off depression are the worst of the symptoms these days.
