Kniting Advice

Apologisies if this is in wrong area.

I have just bought some wool at a bargain price ( Abakhan fabrics - mentioned elsewhere). I have 12 balls of King Cole Monte Carlo, which knits on 4mm needles - is this same as dk?
Also I got 8 balls of Sirdar illusion which knits on 6.5 mm - what will knit up as?

I want to use them both for tops - the monte carlo for a summer top and the illusion for an evening top.

Thanks,
Jane 2112

    hi there,
Generally wool which knits on 4mm (and possibly 3.25mm for the ribs) is double knit (DK) or similar.
The other wool will make a chunky knit sweater, or scarf (ves). I had a quick look on google and it seems to be a fancy wool for pretty jumpers, ponchos etc . Not sure where you might get a free pattern though (perhaps try the website it came from or sirdar website ?). These ones you have to pay for.

Maybe one of the board guides will merge this with another knitting thread, or someone else can shed more light!

  • The sirdar illusion will knit up as a chunky weight, if you have a look at this website it has conversions to help you substitute.

Just as a word of warning though, I've found the sirdar novelty yarns (like snowflake) to be really awkward to knit with!

Or me too - I've tried Snowflake twice now and not had a good time either of them!

I've knitted Snowflake without too much difficulty, but picking up stiches to add a ribbed band is like sexing day old chicks.

Hi. Not an advice question. I have lost the link to the knitting forum I go on, and can't find it in Google, so I'm hoping one of you OSers out there may also use it. I can't remember it's full name, but I know it's CRAFTY something or other. It covers all crafts, and a lady called Melody Yarns is one of the moderators. If any of you use this forum, can you please post the link :-) Thanks.
    A work in progress :D

Wow! I know this in an old post but just wanted to say thanks to the OP for drawing my attention to the Abakhan website. Was looking for some Sirdar Funky Fur and some Sirdar New Fizz and found both heavily discounted on this site. Also have discovered that they have a shop not far from where we are going on holiday at half term, could be an expensive trip!
