Cheapest Marg for Baking

Hi, I'm finding the cost of margarine is hitting us quite hard at the moment and it's putting me off baking. I really hate the value spread for sandwiches so use the Asda own brand above that. It isn't butter but I can eat it without gagging. I want to do more baking and pastry dishes from leftovers but I know when I made fairy cakes with the value spread the tasted funny and even the kids commented on it.

So will it be the same with pastry? Will it effect the taste if I use cheapest and will it bind ok to work with? Any cheap but edible alternatives please?

Thank you.

I stopped using margarine when I had children because I didn't want to be feeding them all those chemicals. Butter's not cheap, I suppose. At least 80p for a 250g block most weeks. How much is margarine? I used to use Stork type bought in huge tubs for cakes and mix it with Trex type for pastry. Now I only use butter.
  • Hello Fourcandles - Not a marg fan - but I did notice a lot of the s/markets have offers on butter at the moment. I wouldn't use anything else - I know it may be a bit more than some other stuff, but after you have put all that time & care into making something I think its worth it. It freezes, and you can use it for everything. Best wishes (& yes my jeans are tight)...Mxx

No idea on cost but I was brought up using solid bars of Stork margarine for everything. My mum used this in sandwiches, pastry, frying eggs and even deep frying our chips (although when it's new Stork the first batch seemed to take forever, after that they were quicker). We never had butter because it was so expensive. In the 70s there was a butter shortage and it went sky high in cost.
