Yet another challenge - but a free money one!

Morning to all money savers.

I've just been having a look at the other challenges on the forum and thought I would come up with another one that won't cost 'you' a penny. I suppose you could say it's another take on the 'sealed pot' challenge (sorry if I've nicked this idea!) but my idea comes from the fact that I am always finding money in the street. Of course these days it's not so much that I'm finding it, I actually look for it now! It's not much money, just a 1p here, a 5p there, but I've always thought to myself, 'I wonder if I counted this all up at the end of the year, how much I would have found altogether?'.

So, as of today, Sat 1 Nov '08, I've decided to put all the wee pennies that I find in the street into a sealed pot. I'll open it on 1 Nov '09 and see how much money I've found over the year.

There you go, a wee pot full (hopefully) of 'free' money.

Does anybody else fancy joining me on my free money hunt?

    Hi Purplelisa

Many years ago I worked in the civil service. One of my colleagues in my office used to go 'penny collecting' after work. He was always very cagey about how much he made but he had a special notebook he kept and he made a record of dates, amounts and streets he 'worked'. He used to take it really seriously. This would have been about 16 years ago maybe but I often used to wonder!!

Hope this helps, maybe it will turn into an obsession though lol

    Good luck xx

I used to know someone who did that, he made a fortune. Unfortunately I can't do it as I can't lean down to pick things up off the floor, especially little things like pennies. Good luck with it!
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

  • Hey guys, thanks for all the advice.

My husband has just given me another tip that I thought I should pass on. If you have a vending or coffee machine at work, have a sweep under the front of the machine for loose change. He's never mentioned it to me before, only now because he saw what I was doing on the computer and said that a guy he works with does it all the time, apparently he regularly finds some wee gold ones.

I'm well up for that, I have no pride!!! (Although clearly my husband does as he has just refused to do it for me at his work.)

Tip: if you can get to the car parks nearest to nightclubs early in the morning (first light or 4-6am), car parks where you have to put coins into the barrier for it to raise the arm. As the club empties and there is a queue of cars to get out, nobody gets out of their car and starts trying to grope around for the £1 they dropped on the floor. If you are near such a car park it can be worth £2-3/morning. Of course not many are like this these days.
