Ive got another thread running on my car...but this is a Q about hubbys.
He owns an old bmw...all paid for. Its valued at about 2,400.
We are still unsure as to weather the OR will have any interest in it as we dont go BR til 27th nov.
He wants to change it like for like, for something more reliable as ours is on its last legs with a lot of work needed on it.
I think we would be better waiting until after our BR and meeting with OR because i dont know how they would view this.....theres something on the forms about vehicles you have owned in the past few years...what do they mean....ones you could have signed to someone else to stop the OR taking it....or just any vehicle you have sold ????? cos we have had a few in that time.
Also we dont know if we will be allowed to keep it anyway , because as it stands its our only asset, although hubby needs it to get to and from work and also to take his mother for regular treatment at hospital.
would the OR frown upon changing it ?? like for like...no money involved. ???
Thanks all, em xx

I sold my car 1week before BR for just under the Parkers guide for £1,900.00.
I then bought a car for £700.00 (around that).
The balance left was going to be used to see us over the coming weeks until new account was set-up etc & rent had to be paid out of cash as well.
I did received a call from the OR as there is a section on the forms where it asks if you have sold a vehicle within the last 12months so of course I filled in the details.
The OR ask me what I spent the money on...I said car & current/future living expenses, she said ok & that was it.BR 08/05/2008

Is it 3years on the form?
I only put down in the last year, like you quite a few vehicles have come & gone.
The OR has the means to find out all info anyway.BR 08/05/2008

Thanks sunk.,
what we were to sell it like for like though....for the only reason that ours needs a hell of a lot of money spent on it and it would save our ourgoings in the futre?
you think they would be ok with that ? or think we were being presumtious in thinking we could keep it ?
ill check those forms now as to how many years it says.

Just signing it over to someone else is not acceptable. The OR would go potty.
But selling the car it acceptable, as long as you can justify why and where the money went. So selling and buying a more reliable car for say £1500 (as its also then under the value threshold) and using the balance for your OR fees is acceptable. Your argument is that you did this on purpose so as not to increase your debt knowing you could not pay that debt back.
As your OH needs the car for work anyway its not going to be touched at a lesser value, and another argument would be that a cheaper car means cheaper running costs (as long as he is going from a BMW to something lesser, not equal!) etc.
Also, you should ensure the car is sold for close to value. So if Parkers valued it at £2550, you cannot sell for £1550 as the OR would view that as deliberate. A few hundred ££ difference though is expected.
A final however - each OR interprets the rules in their own way, so yours may or may not be totally bothered. As said, if you can justify the money and reasons there should not be an issue, but be aware that there is always that slim chance your OR is an odd sod.0 -

No we wernt going to sign i over to somone else....weve seen a car that is a few hundred less than what ours is worth....and yes it would be much less running....servicing and upkeep costs than the BMW. We have been told at the last MOT it would cost at least £900 to get it through the next one as the lumber sensor is going.?????? or something to that effect lol
And 900 squid is something we do not have spare.
So yes i can justify the sale....but its wether i want yet another thing for the OR to pick through...or just wait untill after our meeting....or would i still need to inform he/she.? and knowing my luck i will have a !!!! of an OR that is having the worst day of his life
