Claiming tax back?

From January to March 2008 husband was working and was emergency taxed for the 3 months. Then he starts new job in May 2008 and was emergency taxed for the first month.

Howw do we go about getting these 3/4 months tax back?
He hasn't had any tax monies back on his wage slips, could it be that he's not due them back or do you have to apply for them?

Thanks, :)

For the year to 5/4/08, he need to write to his tax office setting out where he worked for the whole tax year and asking for the refund.
The E tax deducted in May 08 should have been refunded by his employer - he needs to query this with his payroll dept.

  • Hi again, more help needed please! Husband rang the tax office who have said that in order to refund any overdue tax he has to produce the two P45 documents from the places he worked in that tax year. Thing is, we don't have these anymore! What's the best way to get a copy of these?
We don't know any payroll/tax office details for those two jobs, just the names of the places. It just seems like they are trying to make it very hard for anyone to reclaim tax back! Grrr.
We've got the address of where to send the details to when we've got them and then they can work out what is owed. I thought that the tax office would know everything anyway?

The tax office should have these details, but as he has been asked for them I wonder if there are gaps in their records? Some employers are very poor at sending info to HMRC. I think he should do his best to contact the employers for detials (a letter will do) and if he has no luck, write again to the tax office giving as full details as possible about the employers and the dates he worked for them.
A lesson for him - always hang on to his P45 part 1a!

hiya you wont be able to get a copy of p45 but you can ask for a statement of account (i believe thats what its called) and they will send him a copy of all his earnings with them and he can forward them onto the tax office, i know in my area there is around a 7 week delay on the post they are getting through though so could take a while once the tax office has all the info
