I have worked for Sky (in one of their outsourcing call centres) and I got to say this, you need you wits about you. I have to deal with a number of customers who had to claim damages from Sky due to the clumsiness of their engineers.
One of the most distressing examples -the engineer didn't prop up the ladder against the customer's house properly whilst getting something out of his van. The ladder fell onto the customer's 3 month old £55k BMW. Damaged the windscreen, bonnet, seats, driver's door, roof, steering wheel and dashboard. Cost of damage £21k. Plus Sky had to pay for the curtesy car during the 4 weeks the car was in the garage for.
I think at the moment, they are looking at more engineers doing special heights (installing Sky dishes above the 1st floor, on chimneys etc) as some customers in some areas are having to wait a month for an installation, not 5-7 days for a 'normal' installation. So you need to be good at heights."The reason we're successful, darling? My overall charisma, of course." -- Freddie Mercury

if you dont want to register then i will copy/paste some threads that were posted on that forum about working for sky.
names of the poster will not be used
The bloke from Sky digital came over to fit Sky +.
Very nice bloke he was very amicable. From what someone told me on here I was overjoyed to see a van with Homer Simpson and sexy Marge on the side of it.
I don’t know if any of you remember but I posted in the satellite section of this forum for some advice. Well the geezer gave me all the parts I needed and done the installation to a great standard. When I looked into his van I felt like I was 6 years old again in the sweet shop looking at the strawberry bon bons!
Whilst we got talking he started to mention more about his job and the benefits he received. By the time he had finished talking I was thinking WOW.
The point of this thread is to ask anyone amongst us if this is true or not.
I’ve put together all the benefits he mentioned to me:
- 35 days holiday
- FREE diesel for his van and can use this van to travel about. I know it’s not convenient but at the price of petrol today this is idealistic in terms of cost.
- FREE health insurance for him AND his family. FREE for himself I understand but FREE for his family too?
- 2 FREE SKY HD boxes and FREE Broadband. Speaks for itself.
- There must be more I forgot them though…..
Then we started to talk about money/salary. He said that he gets paid a BASIC rate then on top of that it’s almost like piece rate. So for every job he does he gets paid by the minute IF it goes over the scheduled allowed time. He then said that he earned just under £4,000 last month tax free.
I thought bloody heck Sky are making LOTS of money but this is something special and surely he's taking the !!!!!?
Was he talking out of his !!!! or is some of this true? What other benefits do they get?0 -
From what I have heard it is very hard to get a job with sky direct, most of there installers are contractors (drive the plain white vans) and there benefits are limited however they do earn a little bit more per job, but have to pay out for everything.. tools, parts (cable etc), diesel.
Also from speaking to a sky installer there diesel is covered for work time if you wish to drive outside of that you pay for it yourself. Think other wise you would have installers siphoening diesel and selling it on
The perks of working for sky/virgin/any satellite/aerial installers is you can do a lot of private work. I can almost asure you he didnt earn £4000 tax free with sky. Maybe he gives up his evenings/saturdays/sundays to go do private work which is obviously cash in the hand. Basic rate of pay im sure is good but not that good.
All this is ofcourse going from hear say, I have spoke to the contractors and the direct workers to provide the above info. A close family friend applied for a job with sky direct the first thing he was told is he needs to pay £250 up front to do some ladder training course he went f*ck off lol0 -
some more quotes:
2 years ago my mates bro started to work for sly.
At that time it was sky plus.. as he joined he got 1 years free sky plus..
Note: The channels etc are not free, the box, installation, and monthly sky plus charge is free, channels i.e packages had to be paid monthly of-course.0 -

I have worked for Sky as a engineer, its okey but it is hardwork
you will work on a rota 5 days over 7 so have about 1 weekend off
every 6 weeks.
A typical day is about 5-6 sky digital installs, sometimes you have good
day and can be home for 3pm other times everything goes wrong and its
7pm, on a busy month with OT you would be looking at more like £1800
on the whole if your young fit not scared of heights lol, and like working outdoors then go for it.0
