Written and directed by Academy Award-winner John Patrick Shanley and with an exceptional cast including Academy Award-winners Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman plus Academy Award-nominee Amy Adams, DOUBT (cert 15) is a gripping story about the quest for truth, the forces of change and the devastating consequences of blind justice in an age defined by moral conviction.
Nominated for 5 Golden Globes, 2009's hotly-anticipated drama DOUBT, is in UK cinemas everywhere from February 6, 2009.
It's 1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. A vibrant, charismatic priest, Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman), is trying to upend the school's strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep), the iron-gloved Principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline. The winds of political change are sweeping through the community and indeed, the school has just accepted its first black student, Donald Miller. But when Sister James (Amy Adams), a hopeful innocent, shares with Sister Aloysius her guilt-inducing suspicion that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to Donald, Sister Aloysius sets off on a personal crusade to unearth the truth and to expunge Flynn from the school. Now, without a shard of proof besides her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father Flynn which threatens to tear apart the community with irrevocable consequence.

Armed only with the delusions that all his amazing feats and powers are real, and the help of two unlikely traveling companions — a jaded, abandoned housecat named Mittens and a TV-obsessed hamster named Rhino - Bolt discovers he doesn’t need superpowers to be a hero.

Gus van Sant at the 2008 New York Film Critics' Circle awards in New York, where Milk won the best film gong. Photograph: Evan Agostini/AP
Gus van Sant's Milk, a biopic of the first openly gay politician to be elected to public office in the US, is already widely praised, with its central performance by Sean Penn attracting Oscar buzz after winning a Golden Globe nomination and critics awards on both coasts in the US. Van Sant will be live onstage at London's BFI Southbank on Friday 16 January, after a screening of Milk, to talk about the film and his career todate. We have three pairs of tickets to give away.
The adjective that perhaps best describes the Palme d'Or-winning film-maker is iconoclastic – after a clutch of such distinctive early films as Drugstore Cowboy (1989), My Private Idaho (1991) and Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (1993), he hit the bigtime with Good Will Hunting (1997), which won Oscars for star Robin Williams and co-writers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. His shot-by-shot remake of Psycho (1998) had a mixed reception, but no one could dismiss his chutzpah for taking it on. And he certainly earned his auteur spurs on Elephant (2003), the drama based on the Columbine high school massacre that won him the top prize at Cannes.
His new biopic documents Harvey Milk's rise to prominence from his early days of activism to his eventual assassination by a homophobic fellow municipal politician. We have three pairs of tickets to give away to a screening of Milk and the subsequent Guardian Interview with Gus van Sant at 6.30pm on Friday 16 January at NFT1, BFI Southbank. For your chance to win a pair, just fill in the blanks below.
