Help needed on loan / credit report

Hello All

Just wondering if anyone could help?

I had a loan agreement for £1200 took out in Jan 05 for a car the car got wrote off and with the insurance money I sent a cheque to settle the account. The cheque was cashed. I thought nothing more about this unit a debt collection agency contacted me for the money several months later, I explained to them I had cleared the balance of my agreement so they must be a ''mix up'' to which they said they would investigate and come back to me. I never herd anything from the collection company again so presumed it was a mistake.

I recentley order my credit report to find out that the company I took the loan with had been registering a missed payment against me every month for 2 years. On looking into the account it came to light I had incorrectly addressed the cheque to a different loan company (similar names). On receiving a copy of the cheque for proof this happen I immediately paid the account balance off again.
My question are should the loan company have contacted me to let me know my mistake. I know I was in the wrong and was naive( I was only 17) however I think its unfair that they had been marking my report for missed payments without contacting myself.
Is there anything I can do ? I’m currently looking at Appling for a mortgage and need this sorting ASAP
