Failed Credit Check

Hi,
I have been on the phone to my current mortgage lender to apply for a mortgage on a new house that we are interested in purchasing but I didn't pass the credit check. The told me to check with Experian so I signed up with Experian and I have looked through my report on Experian and I have a score of 457 (Very Poor!).
I have two CC's and I have missed one payment on each credit card as I didn't set a direct debit up and missed the payment. I have made quite a few applications for credit cards and loans in the past 6 months. I obviously want to improve my score as quickly as possible. I have two CC's and I have just paid the balances off in the last couple of days, one was at £500 and the other was at £1100 which is paid off using an overdraft that I already have.
Am I correct in thinking that using an authorised overdraft does not affect your credit rating?
Should this improve my credit file and do I need to/or do I have the right to ask the CC companies to update my credit history with Experian? and is there anything else I can do to improve my rating?
Thank you for your time.
