Running late on paper return....

in Cutting tax
Hi,
As usual have left it to last possible minute to complete my return...
I've always done the paper version because I thought with online you had to do your own calculations of tax due and there was a fine if you got this wrong and underpaid.
HOWEVER, it seems to say on some paperwork that if you do it online they do the calculations for you of what tax is payable - is this correct does anyone know please?
Are there any disadvantages to filing online rather than on paper? If I could leave it until January that would be a big help at the moment...
Many thx in advance.

I've not used the Revenue's software myself but understand the calculation is done for you.
As for disadvantages remember that you need to register and receive some sort of authorisation through the post. This can take time so don't leave this to the last minute. Also try not to leave the actual filing too late. The system has trouble coping with the volume in the last week in January. If it’s not important to you, don’t consume it0 -
I did mine on the internet for the first time this year. I usually use a tax advisor to do it the paper way but i thought i would save myself a few pennies and see how difficult it was to do it myself and it was so easy. It worked out everything for me and i have to pay a grand total of 20p.0

The online version does the calculation for you. No disadvantage to using it ... but you do need to prepare and register for it well in advance.
And don't leave it until this late in Jan to do the actual filing! Otherwise you'll find it clogged up with the other thousands of last minute people! If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
