My apologies if this is not the right place for this request.
I'm planning a Chinese Hamper for my bro and sis in law and am hopeful that you good people can asist with some ideas
I've not got too far with it and OH is useless - he doesn't think it's a good idea so i'm determined to prove him wrong!
So, i have the obvious in mind - chop sticks, recipe book and soy sauce but then ideas dried up!
Thanks in advance

Good luck with itRaising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0 -
See if you can find a local chinese supermarket - a wonder around may unearth a few treasures to add that you wouldn't find in the supermarket.
If the recipe book has several recipes that you will need a steamer for, you could always add a bamboo steamer - a small one will be cheap.
Don't forget the fortune cookies!!!0 -
I think this is a lovely idea - ignore your OH!!
My OH is Chinese and some commonly used ingrediants in Chinese cooking are:
light soy sauce
dark soy sauce
oyster sauce
rice wine
toasted sesame oil
dried chilli flakes
hoisin sauce
fermented black beans
these might be good to include in the hamper.
Also you could buy 2 rice bowls and spoons to add to the hamper.
If you live in London, maybe you could go to Chinatown and add some Chinese sweets or cakes?0 -
I'm Chinese, and I had NO IDEA what a Chinese Hamper was. . .until I saw the pictures and the posts. I was wondering why it's known as a "hamper" and not just as a "Chinese-themed" basket (since that's what it looks like to me, a gift basket with Asian ingredients placed in it). . .is it because we're known for doing laundry? Hmn. . .so intriguing!
Also, a little tidbit about the origin of fortune cookies. . .they were actually first served in San Francisco by a Japanese restaurant owner! If you want to put an extra twist on the fortune cookie. . .you can dip half of it in white and the other half in dark chocolate to create a "yin-yang" effect. Not quite "Chinese" but pretty tasty! No Unapproved or Personal links in signatures please - FT30 -

Hi, yep I put this one together. My ideas came from the Chinese Food Made Easy cookbook. A great book with relatively easy recipes. I bought it for £4.99 from the Book People (I've looked, can't find it on their website now?). I included:
The cookbook
Wok (£2.50 from Wilkinsons)
Chopsticks (got these from Ikea, had a real problem finding some)
Dark and light soy sauce
Coconut milk
Rice
Noodles
Sesame oil
Five spice
Couple little tins of water chestnuts, baby corn
Tiger beer x 2 bottles
Green tea
Few other bits but can't remember what they are, sorry!
I would have added prawn crackers but at the time of making (last month) the use by dates were before Xmas.
HTH:wave: If you want the rainbow, you've got to put up with the rain :wave:0
