Can anyone explain what the T tax code means? Since I've been changed to it my tax payment has nearly doubled.

This link should tell you all you need to know. It generally means that you have more than one "item" be it income through second job or pension, that the HM Revenue needs to take into account when you are paying tax.

I changed jobs twice within 2 months... would this have caused it?

Could well possibly.

Especially to do with your P45 - your employment, if they don't have figures for your previous tax paid and your total earnings to do they don't know what these are therefore it is hard to make sure you pay the right tax.

The 'T' by itself isn't particularly indicative ...... it's the numbers accompanying it which will determine how much you pay? If you have a recently issued 'T' code - then you should equally have a P2 (Coding Notice) explaining what it is and how the numbers / allowances are arrived at?

I had to fill in a P46 as the old employer had not sorted out my p45 before starting with the new company...

just list your incomes and the full tax codes and maybe there will be something substantial to comment on
