Getting money back for faulty item if you pay by Credit card

Please can someone help me with something. I bought a set of scales from Argos, costing about £50, which I paid for on my credit card. I got them home and when I got them out the box to try them (albeit a couple of weeks later) they were broken, so today with the receipt I took them back for a refund.
They had no objection to the refund, but the problem is that the credit card I'd originally paid on, has since been cancelled (the 0% ran out last week so I transferred and cancelled it) and Argos say they can only refund onto the card I paid with, or give me a gift card. Well I rarely buy anything from Argos, and I really cant afford to lose £50, if it was a tenner I might not be too bothered but £50 is half of next months credit card payment and its no good to me on a gift card!
Does anyone know if I have a right to demand they refund it to a different card? Or if there is anything I can do?
Thanks

Can you not just exchange them? Presumably you still want scales if you only returned the old ones because they were faulty IYSWIM?
Failing that could you maybe sell the gift card to someone, or maybe put it on ebay?:starmod:C'est la vie:starmod:0 -
No, I dont really want them anymore now I've thought about it (was probably in truth an impulse purchase anyway) and I dont know anyone who shops in Argos and Ebay I dont think anyone would buy it unless I practically gave it away :-(0

Could you ask them to split up into say 5 giftcards for Christmas presents? What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0
