I'd give him the money. I drink why shouldn't he. A homeless person probably has more need of a stiff drink than those of us who are more fortunate.

I've always thought big issue sellers were a bit dim. If they had anything about them they'd branch out 'n sell stuff like fhm and Ideal Home magazine.

"If you choose to give a homeless person money then it becomes 'their' money not yours and they should be free to spend it as they wish. When you receive a gift of money from someone you don't expect them to tell you what you can and cannot spend it on."

Actually, I do. I have been given money as a gift by my parents in the past (unearned by me, so same as here) with the understanding that it would be spent on a particular thing. If I spent the money on something else it would, to me, be akin to stealing/ obtaining money by deception, albeit not on a legal definition. Even if all that had happened was that I had been told how to spend it in vague terms, such as "on something useful/ that you NEED" etc I would feel bound. It's different if the person would give you moeny regardless, such as a birthday gift, but not if you regard yourself as helping someonerather than treating them.

This is actually a deeper moral dilemma than it first appears.

Giving money is like giving permission to the recipient to do as they please with that money regardless of his own ability to judge his own essential needs.
What if the homeless man was shooting up drugs? What if he had bought a knife or a gun with your money to "protect" himself on the streets?

This country gives financial aid to other countries around the world, but do we know where the money ends up? Tinpot dictators with Swiss bank accounts drive round in Mercedes while their people starve; despotic regimes are armed with rockets, missiles, even nuclear weapons, while their hospitals and infrastructure cant cope.
Assistance should be given in kind so aid goes to the needy, not to the corrupt.
Dont give the homeless man money - give him a lager!
