I dion't believe I've ever been on a train that wasn't on either on a Saturday or a Sunday (the Portadown - Dublin run). It's been quite regular this last 5 years:T
Just about sums up the demise of railways in northern Ireland.

Lack of competition and good routes is what I blame

Lack of competition means they're losing money?

Use it or lose it i guess - why run trains that arent being used?

NIR is over staffed .Go to most stations and there is someone to sell you a ticket ,someone to check you ticket and then when you board the train your ticket is checked again .Why cant tickets be purchased from a machine .why can they not use automatic ticket barriers . At the same time as NIR are crying poverty Irish rail have ordered new trains and are expanding the service .
Oh the price off fuel has actuall gone down ,but NIR must have bought in advance and got stuffed .

as someone who lives next to the larne line, it amazes me that they run normal length trains with 2 or 3 people on them at all times of the day. Can't be good for the fuel economy dragging an extra 30 or 40 ton of empty carriage from belfast to larne or wherever they go when they rattle out of sight.
