Payment & deduction Statements - not rcvd!!!

I've been chasing these for my husband from a contractor for months now - they assure me that my statement (to them) showing gross/net payments/ tax is correct - but - I'm nervous - so I can work out what should have been paid more or less

- but what happens if

a) I produce a figure which does not quite correlate to what they have paid
b) what if they haven't paid at all!
c) could he be penalised for saying that £xx tax has been paid without proof from the contractor.

I've registered on line now so have another month or two to sort this out - hopefully!

  • Am I right in presuming your husband was a sub-contractor and has been paid his invoices, less 20% tax. You are now chasing the contractor for the payment and deduction sheet confirming the amount of tax deducted? (A contractor should provide a statement within 14 days of the end of each tax month).

If this is the case, don't worry about it - just inform HMRC that you haven't received the payment and deduction sheet and presumably they will chase up the contactor. They can then confirm to you what tax they have received from that contactor regarding your husband.

From the sounds of it, it is the contractor who is at fault, not your husband.

Sorry if I have got the wrong end of the stick.

Yes you have the gist - thank you - and yes it is they at fault - they also still owe him £2K for works done earlier in the year - so don't want to make too much of a fuss as we still need that money!
